Overcome Perfectionism and enjoy your life. The ills of perfectionism are most of us in this world have been raised to believe that perfectionism is an essential trait. Observing details closely while getting work done may lead to completing that perfectly and that trait may also allow bragging. But, in reality, being perfect can cost you a lot.
Overcoming Perfectionism is necessary:
So, to move away from perfectionism, first, you should acknowledge that it is bad for you. It is not worth it if you keep beating yourself up over minute errors, it slowly takes away your sense of self-worth and will make you less happy. But you deserve better than this!
You may have spent years cultivating this habit which is not less than a bully, you eventually develop an unconscious reflex and put yourself down for every small thing.
Overcome Perfectionism:
1. Get over the all-or-nothing Mindset:
Overcome Perfectionism and change your mindset. This mindset leads to depression; you can leave somethings the way they are, you do not have to make everything perfect. Surely, you will be able to complete lots of work in time and later work on the precision. You should work on how you can make progress rather than working with the same thing and striving to make it perfect.
2. Work on the 80/20 Mantra:
If you want to make everything perfect, you may end up wasting your time on unnecessary details. Ask yourself why you are doing that task, what are the important details in it, how did your seniors or people ahead of you complete this, what difficulties they faced and how you can overcome them and complete the task in a limited duration. If you are getting maximum things right, say 80% of the work is done perfectly, you are good to go!
3. Self-compassion or Self Love is Important:
When you love yourself, you will not push yourself too hard, you will cope up with things quickly. Being kind towards yourself is an important thing these days. Do not neglect yourself, work for yourself, give time to your body and meditate to achieve the peace within. Do not blame yourself for things that were not in your hand. Somethings are meant to be, they happen by the will of God. The ills of perfectionism will make you compare yourself with others and you will not be happy with yourself.
4. Value your Relationships:
As you grow older, you will tend to know the worth of the people around you, your family. You may be giving 100% to your work and not spending time with your family, stop that. Your family is important. Spending time with them is important, as they were the ones who helped you become what you are today you cannot run behind money/perfectionism and leave them behind. Make it a routine to spend a minimum of half an hour with your loved one, talk to them, show that you care for them.
5. Celebrate each Milestone | Celebrate Victory and Failure:
You should celebrate each milestone, even if it is a tiny one and you have spent hours in completing a task, you have achieved something; you invested your time in doing the work, if not achieving success, you have learned something new, Celebrate it! This will make you feel good and you will feel positive and be more efficient.
DOUBTS ON PERFECTIONISM
Is OCD and Perfectionism the same?
A. No, the terms are used interchangeably but OCD is not as same as being a perfectionist. When you are a perfectionist, you have high expectations from something, you maintain high standards. Whereas, OCD is a psychiatric condition where the person has thoughts or conditions that are repetitive and they cannot control it. The ills of perfectionism are feelings that may try to make you achieve perfection, which with age may turn to OCD.
2. Is perfectionism ever good for someone?
A. Striving for excellence and being forced to be perfect are two different things. Perfectionism may be good for someone and may deteriorate the mental health of someone. I am not saying being perfect is bad but do not push yourself too much, do not be a neurotic perfectionist.
