How to overcome Discouragement? Discouragement is different for human beings, and it is something which happens to everyone.
Eventually, every person will feel it, including those who are in a good position. I am sure you have experienced discouragement at a point of your life. Maybe you felt discouraged as you read this article. Here is the cure…
It is a part of what makes the human experience-rich—the highs and the lows. If you do not experience the lows, then you would never appreciate the highs.
Do you know how many times I decided to quit but did not do so? Every single day!!!
So here is what I have learned about fighting against discouragement:
Causes of Discouragement:
1. Cause – Fatigue
When you are physically or emotionally exhausted, you are a special candidate to feel discouraged. Your resistance is lowered and things can seem difficult than they really are. This mostly happens when you are halfway through a huge project and you feel tired.
2. Cause – Frustration
When unfinished tasks pile up, it is really normal for you to feel overwhelmed. And when incidental, non- essential matters or the unexpected interrupt you and distract you from achieving what you really need to do, your frustration levels can easily lead you to discouragement.
3. Cause – Failure
Sometimes your best plans fall apart, the projects collapse, the deal falls through, no one shows up to the events. How do you react?? Do you feel sorry for yourself? Do you blame it on others?
4. Cause – Fear
Fear can be the cause in most of the cases for discouragement than we would like to admit. The fear of criticism (What will people think or say?), the fear of responsibilities (What if I cannot handle this?), and the fear of failure (What if I blow it?) can cause the major onsets of the blues.
How to Overcome Discouragement? Cures for Discouragement:
1. Take rest:
The first and foremost cure to overcome discouragement is Rest. If you need a break, surely you must take one! You will be more effective when you return back to work. If you are burning the candle at both the ends, you are not as bright as you think!
2. Reorganize:
Discouragement does not mean you are doing the wrong thing. It may just be that you are doing the right thing in the wrong or ineffective way. Try a new method. Rearrange things a little bit.
3. God is always there with you
Just ask God. He will give you energy. There is incredible, motivating power in having faith in God.
4. Resist the discouragement
Fight back!!! If you feel discouraged, it is because you have allowed yourself to feel that way. No one can force you to feel discouraged or bad about yourself.
God never wants to discourage you. He may allow certain situations that are difficult, but his goal is always for your betterment.
And when God is not responsible for the reason of discouragement, he is the provider of all that cures your discouragement. Just stay close to God and keep going ahead!
Disappointment, Discouragement, failures and setbacks—all these things are that can help you if you have and maintain an empowering mindset. The meaning of life is to learn from the experiences and reduce the amount of time that you allow yourselves to get discouraged. So the next time you start to feel discouraged, this is what you should do in order to avoid such feeling:
5. Take the longer view
Discouragement usually occurs when our expectations do not align with our reality. In most of the cases, your expectations might not be realistic. If you take a longer view and reduce your expectations a little, it can really help to avoid discouragement. The reality is good things take time and effort to happen in real. So you have to be patient!
6. Remember, there is no such thing called failure. There is a word called learning!
When you feel that you have failed, discouragement often follows. Anyhow, failure does not exist, except for the meaning that we think and give it. If you do not get the result that you expect, when you want it, you just need to take one more action. You can choose, instead of thinking that failure is bad, to think that failure is education, and hence good. When you look it in this way, you realize that failure is not something that is bad or something to be avoided. It is simply education.
7. Stay true to your vision. View it again in our mind
If you are feeling discouraged, you should think about your vision. Think about what you want to create in life. Imagine about it clearly. Feel what and how it would feel like if your image came into reality. What would this mean to you? Once you see and feel it, you will also feel empowered and you can overcome discouragement.
8. Do not let your ego get in the way of your success
Your ego can be the primary cause of your feelings of discouragement. You should control your ego. When you do so, you are on the way to development. Growth surely leads to happiness. When you are growing you feel really good, and you are not discouraged.
9. Stop comparing yourself to others. You are on your unique path
A sure way to get discouraged is to concentrate on other people in a comparative manner. Here is why: you usually see their successes and strengths. You see what they have and what you do not have. You see why and how they are better than you. When you do this you will feel discouraged and you feel bad about yourselves. You do not see their struggles, their fears and their failures. So do not do it. It is not empowering at all. Do not compare. You are on your unique path. It is good to be inspired by other people, but if by hearing other’s story, you feel that you are less than them, you need to just concentrate on your own path.
10. Consider who to spend time with
The people who you are spending your time with might be a major contributing factor for feeling discouragement. This can be a really tough one, especially if those people are your family and loved ones. We have a tendency to become who we mostly associate with, and if we spend all our time with people who are constantly being negative, and always keep feeling sorry for themselves, we can be influenced to see life in a similar way. What should you do? You cannot simply cut loved ones out of your lives. What you should do is just expand your social network. Join a group of friends that has a positive mindset. You should start to surround yourselves with positive people to balance and overcome discouragement.
11. Go outside, move and breathe
Fresh air and sunshine will have a great effect on our feelings. Sometimes when you are feeling low, all that you need to do is just to go outside and breathe. Movement and exercise are a fantastic way to feel good. Positive emotions can be produced by motion. So, when you start to feel low, take deep breathes, go outside, feel the fresh air, let the sun hit our face, go for a hike, a walk, a bike ride, a swim, a run etc. You will definitely feel amazing.
12. Talk to your mentor
Your mentor is a great source of wisdom when we are feeling low. So, when discouragement rears its ugly head, go have a coffee with your mentor. They will be able to give you wisdom based on their experience. In most cases, they will also give you tough love and help you to snap out of it if you are feeling sorry for yourselves. They will also help you to make a plan of action to work your way out.
13. Try mind mapping
A mind mapping is a simple and empowering exercise that can help trigger your creativity and also pull you out of discouragement. Take a blank piece of paper. Write out what is your goal. Then map the ideas that will get you there. Break those actions into sub-actions. Once you are done you will have a great plan of action. Working it out will break the chains of discouragement.
14. Go find someone who you can help
This is a great way to avoid and overcome discouragement. Go find someone who wants help, and help them. It is really simple. When you serve others, when you go out of our way to help other people in need, you will feel better. It is impossible to feel discouraged when you are giving all your efforts on behalf of other people. You are concentrating on ourselves too much. That is why you feel bad. Something is not right in your life. When you stop overthinking about yourselves, and when you direct your attention to others, you will feel better.
