Emotional barriers are a crucial part of mental health. I think, whatever your present situation is, you should have emotional barriers. Your mental health is the most important thing, it should be your priority. People who are emotionally dependent on other people suffer the most.
How can you maintain emotional barriers?
1. Not overexplaining or justifying yourself to people:
Some narcissistic people will play with your emotions and can act cold when you keep explaining yourself to them. Your God knows what your intentions are and when your intentions are not bad, you do not have to explain yourself to your people. And if they are not your people, they will ask for your explanation.
2. Boundary of self-disclosure:
As mentioned in the previous point, you do not have to reveal much about yourself and your mental health to people who always keep demanding from you beyond the limits. When you disclose more information about yourself, people who do not like you can also spread rumours about you. In some cases, self -disclosure is self-sabotaging.
3.Make serious conversations in person:
People who are not emotionally mature can make fun of you in public in order to insult you. So, if a topic is very serious and important, have it in person, in order to avoid fights and cold-wars.
Getting your mental health and emotional conditions checked before supporting others is a must. Mental and emotional health check-up is not bad. I do not mean to say that you are crazy. If you do not care about yourself first, how will you take care of others?
5.Saying NO:
Saying NO to things you do not like or you do not feel like doing is also a part of self-care. Saying Yes to everything and doing it half-heartedly is toxic and can drain your energy, which in turn affects your mental health.
6. Allow people to be responsible for their own emotions:
This is to some people who shout at you for things not going well in their life. Such people look insane. Tell them that whatever happens in life, happens naturally and if they feel frustrated, you are not a rehabilitation centre for them. Just cut the chords and let go of toxic people and relationships for the sake of your own well-being.
7. Give yourself permission to feel:
Whatever you feel, good or bad, it is natural. Events happen in your life to teach you a lesson. You must feel it, accept it and let go of it. Do not blame yourself for anything bad happening in your or anyone else’s life.
8. Do not expose yourself to things triggering your traumas:
It is healthy to avoid things that do not help you in healing and in turn traumatize you by reminding you of past incidents. It is ok if people think you overreacted at some points. We do not have to care about what people say.
It is ok to be you
Keep looking after your goals, your dreams, your happiness, your well-being and yourself. Explore yourself before you explore about others, know your worth, know yourself and what you need over what you want. Take care of yourself and love yourself. Find peace within yourself!
