ACTS OF WORSHIP THAT ERASE YOUR SINS

Islam teaches that some acts of worship not only bring you closer to Allah (SWT) but also serve as a means of erasing sins. So here are some acts of worship that can erase your sins…

1.  Prayer (Ṣalāh)

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“Do you see if there was a river at the door of one of you in which he bathes five times a day—would any dirt remain on him?” They said, “No dirt would remain.” He said, “That is the likeness of the five daily prayers. Allah wipes away sins with them.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari 528, Sahih Muslim 667

Therefore, praying regularly cleanses a person spiritually, just like water cleanses the body.

2. Wudu (Ablution)

Narrated by Abu Huraira (RA):

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“When a Muslim or a believer washes his face (in wudhu), every sin which he committed with his eyes is washed away with the water—or with the last drop of water. When he washes his hands, every sin they wrought is washed away from his hands with the water—or with the last drop of water. And when he washes his feet, every sin to which his feet walked is washed away with the water—or with the last drop of water—so that he comes out pure from all sins.”

– Sahih Muslim, Book of Purification

3. Hajj and Umrah

Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said “(The performance of) Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous one, and the reward of Al-Hajj al-Mabroor (the one accepted by Allah) is nothing but Paradise.”

– [Sahih al-Bukhari 1773 and in other collections]

4. Fasting

Ramadan

“Whoever fasts during Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven.”

(Bukhari & Muslim)

Ashura (10th of Muharram)

“Fasting the day of Ashura expiates the sins of the previous year.”

(Muslim, 1162)

Arafah (9th of Dhul-Hijjah)

“It expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.”

(Muslim, 1162)

5. Reading & Reflecting on the Qur’an

While reciting Qur’an itself is a form of worship, Tawbah (repentance) that results from sincere reflection on the Qur’an leads to forgiveness.

6. Sincere Repentance (Tawbah)

Allah says:

“But whoever repents, believes, and does righteous deeds, it is they who will enter Paradise, and will not be wronged at all.”

(Qur’an 19:60)

Sincere repentance wipes away all sins — even major ones — if the conditions are met: stop the sin, regret it, resolve never to return, and seek forgiveness.

7. Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah)

Saying:

“Subḥān-Allāh wa bi-ḥamdih” 100 times a day erases sins even if they are like the foam of the sea.

(Bukhari & Muslim)

“Whoever says: ‘Astaghfirullāh al-‘Aẓīm alladhī lā ilāha illa huwa al-ḥayy al-qayyūm wa atūbu ilayh’ — his sins will be forgiven even if he fled from battle.”

(Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi – Hasan)

8. Giving Charity (Ṣadaqah)

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Charity extinguishes sin just as water extinguishes fire.”

(Tirmidhi, 2616 — Hasan)

9.  Attending Funerals & Janazah

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever follows the funeral procession of a Muslim out of faith and in the hope of reward… his sins will be forgiven.”

(Bukhari & Muslim)
